About

The Royal Torbay Yacht Club are pleased to announce that the Squib Class will once again be returning  to Torbay, in June 2025 for their National Championships. The class were last in Torbay in 2019 where they enjoyed a hugely successful event.

Organisers are expecting a big entry from across the country at this popular venue, renowned for it’s hospitality and with racing taking place on some of the finest sailing waters in the world. The event will take place from June 22nd to 27th. Eight races over five days are scheduled, a full and lively social programme is being planned and competitors can be assured of  warm welcome to the English Riviera.

The Royal Torbay Yacht Club has been at the heart of sailing in Tor Bay for over 160 years and remains so today. The club supports Yacht and Dinghy racing, Sail and Motor cruising, training and Junior sailing offering a range of opportunities for all ages. The historic clubhouse sitting proudly above the harbour offers a warm and friendly welcome to members, new members and visitors alike.

The National Squib is a one design racing keelboat, originally designed by Oliver Lee in 1967. The class association has over 600 members. There are around 30 fleets in the UK and Ireland, racing at club, regional and national levels, on coastal, estuary and inland waters.

The Squib is just under 6.0m in length, with a 1.87m beam and a fin keel of 1m draft. Its two person racing crew use Jib, Main and traditional Spinnaker with a total sail area of 29m2. Its all-up weight is 680kg, so a Squib can be trailed by a medium-sized car.

The Squib has been described as “a lovely little yacht” but when being sailed competitively can readily be appreciated for performance characteristics more akin to a racing dinghy.
