The world-famous Band of His Majesty’s Royal Marines will be back with a military music spectacular featuring festive music, military marches, big band hits and popular showstoppers.
Whether you prefer the musical skills of the concert band, the rhythmic sounds of the big band or the Corps of Drums, there is something for everyone at this spectacular festive concert.
For over 360 years, the Royal Marines have provided unbroken service and are committed to protecting and promoting the Nation’s security, prosperity and reputation. Their bands are also renowned for their world class musical skills and we are very pleased that they are joining us once again for this special annual concert which marks the start of the festive season.
The Royal Marines have a unique place in Britain's armed services. They were formed over three hundred years ago in 1664 as 'sea soldiers' and even today they still fulfil the same role and are the envy of the whole world. Throughout their illustrious history, the Royal Marines have seen action in many international arenas of conflict including the American War of Independence, the Battle of Trafalgar, and more recently the Falkland Islands and serving in Northern Ireland alongside the British Army.
Music making of one form or another has always been an integral part of the official and social life of the Royal Navy. The high standards of musical and ceremonial performance associated with Royal Marines Bands and Orchestras are not easily achieved. All members of the Royal Marines Band have trained at the Royal Marines School of Music, currently based in Portsmouth, and musicians have to pass an arduous two years and eight months training programme with all higher level examinations set and marked by recognised external examination boards. Most have to master at least two instruments with some being required to play three, in order to meet the many different musical demands.
