About

Kimpton Clocktower Hotel is proud to announce the launch of a new, free art exhibition that celebrates the vibrant creative synergy between music, art, and Manchester’s cultural spirit and the iconic local record label, Sprechen. Opening on 3rd April, just ahead of Record Store Day, ‘Ein Null’ brings to life a decade of groundbreaking musical output and unforgettable artwork from Sprechen.

The Sprechen label has made a notable impact on the city's vibrant music scene in the last decade, serving as a platform to showcase forward-thinking music from both established and emerging artists, with a diverse approach to sound and music prints. The new free exhibition features an eclectic mix of visual works from designers who have shaped the Sprechen identity, making it an unmissable experience for art and music lovers alike.

Chris Massey, founder of Sprechen, says: “I'm thrilled to be showcasing the last 10 years of artwork and celebrating the designers who have been integral to making Sprechen a respected source of underground electronic music from Manchester and across the world.”

David Lockhart, General Manager of Kimpton Clocktower Hotel, comments: “From designers to musicians, Manchester has always been and continues to be a powerhouse of creativity. We at Kimpton Clocktower are champions of Northern talent and the creative energy that defines Manchester’s music and arts scene, and we are overjoyed to provide a space where these artistic expressions come together.”

Sprechen’s ten-year journey has been marked by its distinctive approach to artwork to its releases. Designers have been encouraged to inject their own personalities into the designs to represent their own interpretation of the music. This has led to the artwork taking as much of an open-minded approach as the label’s release policy, leading to various styles from digital graphic designs to hand-cut stencils, spray paint, and screen prints - all brought to life by a talented collective of creatives.

The installation which will be hanging on the walls of Refuge and features work from Alex Borg, whose illustrations have been a core part of Sprechen’s visual identity since its inception.

Borg reflects on his journey: “When I was a kid I was always obsessed with music and art, going to the local record shop with my parents every weekend was a tradition and something that’s stayed with me ever since. I’ve been lucky enough to work for Skint Records, Paul Weller and a host of independent bands and artists creating the designs for their music releases.I count Sprechen as one of the most enjoyable experiences of my career - here’s to the next 10 years of music and art!”

Also featured in the exhibition are works by Luke Martin, Chris Maude and Tom Bevan, each adding their unique perspective to the celebration of Sprechen’s legacy.

Ein Null: 10 Years of Sprechen The Exhibition will be free to the public at Refuge, Kimpton Clocktower Hotel, from 7pm on Thursday 3rd April until 31st May 2025.
