Gloucestershire Cheese Rolling 2025: Everything You Need to Know

The world-famous Gloucestershire Cheese Rolling returns on Monday 26 May 2025, bringing thrilling action and quirky tradition back to Cooper’s Hill near Gloucester. Every year, thousands of spectators and daring competitors flock to this iconic event to witness the unforgettable spectacle of contestants hurtling down the steep hillside in pursuit of a wheel of Double Gloucester cheese.

Whether you’re brave enough to join the race or prefer to cheer from the sidelines, here’s your complete guide to Gloucestershire’s legendary Cheese Rolling in 2025.

When Is Gloucestershire Cheese Rolling in 2025?

The 2025 Cooper’s Hill Cheese Rolling takes place on the spring bank holiday, Monday 26 May. Races are set to begin from 12pm, so be sure to arrive early to secure a good viewing spot.

What Is Gloucestershire Cheese Rolling?

It is one of Britain’s quirkiest and most thrilling traditions. Participants throw themselves down Cooper’s Hill, chasing a wheel of Double Gloucester cheese that can reach breakneck speeds of up to 80mph.

The 180-metre hill, with its staggering 1:2 gradient, is the steepest slope in Gloucestershire. Most racers tumble their way to the bottom, but the first person to cross the finish line wins the prized cheese.

The History of Gloucestershire Cheese Rolling

This centuries-old tradition is believed to date back over 600 years. The first written record of Cheese Rolling appeared in 1826, but even then, it was described as an ancient custom.

The true origins are a mystery, though some speculate it began as a pagan festival marking the start of summer. Despite cancellations in 2020 and 2021 during the Covid-19 pandemic, the cheese was still rolled down the hill to keep the tradition alive.

Who Can Take Part in Cheese Rolling?

If you’re over 18 years old and up for the challenge, you can compete in the Cheese Rolling without prior registration. Simply show up at the top of Cooper’s Hill on the day.

The event features separate downhill races for men and women, as well as uphill races for children, ensuring everyone has a chance to join in the fun.

Is Gloucestershire Cheese Rolling Dangerous?

Cheese Rolling is not for the faint-hearted! With loose rocks, stinging nettles, and an incredibly steep incline, injuries are to be expected. Most racers take a tumble or two, and broken bones are not uncommon.

While the event is exhilarating, it’s important to remember there is no official organising body, and participants take part entirely at their own risk. Protective clothing is highly recommended for those daring enough to race.

Who Were the 2024 Cheese Rolling Champions?

The 2024 Cheese Rolling saw competitors from around the world battling it out on Cooper’s Hill:

Tom Kopke from Germany claimed victory in the first men’s race and vowed to return in 2025 to defend his title.

Australian racer Dylan Twiss triumphed in the second men’s race.

American competitor Abby Lampe from North Carolina won the women’s race for the second time.

Local hero Joshua Shepherd from Brockworth brought home a win in the final men’s race, becoming a two-time champion.
