Cliff Top Walk Cheddar Gorge

About

Stretch your legs and get close to nature! This spectacular walk takes you round a 3 mile route, up one side of the gorge and back down the other, and rewards walkers with some of the finest views in Somerset. On a clear day, elevated over 900ft above sea-level, you can see for miles across the Mendip Hills.

As well as discovering one of England’s most impressive landscapes, you’ll get to experience a diverse and captivating habitat, teaming with flowers and wildlife. Some of the species that make their home here, such as greater horseshoe bats, dormice and great crested newts, are so rare in Europe that the Gorge is now a Special Area for Conservation (SAC).

Cheddar Gorge is also home to primitive goats and the UK’s biggest flock of Soay sheep who roam free and keep the scrub down. And don’t forget to keep your eyes peeled for the Cheddar pink, a delicate flower which is only found in Cheddar! There’s a whole host of British wildlife just waiting to be discovered.

NEED TO KNOW

Cheddar Gorge is private land, although a public bridal way crosses it. However, anyone with a Cheddar Gorge and Caves Day Ticket is welcome to explore the 360 acre Nature Reserve.

Wear suitable clothing - it can be cold and windy at the top of the gorge.

Wear walking boots – it’s rocky underfoot ,and can be muddy and slippy when it rains.

Take care at cliff edges, keep your dogs on a lead and follow The Countryside Code.

The footpath is rocky, steep in places, and is inaccessible to wheelchair users or those with limited mobility.
